Anticipating Changes in Federal Disaster Assistance

Rather than relying on uncertain federal assistance, we must take control of our

financial future.

Recent developments indicate potential shifts in federal disaster assistance that could directly impact Friendswood’s ability to recover from major storms:

  • In March 2025, an executive order was signed to transfer disaster preparedness responsibilities from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to state and local governments.

  • Discussions about overhauling or potentially dissolving FEMA have raised concerns about reduced federal support for disaster-prone states, meaning cities like Friendswood may no longer receive the same level of reimbursement for storm recovery and emergency response.

These changes suggest that in future catastrophic events, Friendswood may have to shoulder more of the financial burden for recovery efforts. Rather than relying on uncertain federal assistance, we must take control of our financial future by building stronger reserves and ensuring our infrastructure can withstand severe weather events.
